Westport Fire Department On Shift Training Schedule
The following schedule is to be followed by all shifts. The goal of this schedule is to see to it that all groups are trained equally, and competently, regarding various topics that firefighters may face while on duty. Shift Commanders are to see to it that all topics are covered in depth to the best of their ability. If a Shift Commander does not feel comfortable with a topic, the Officer shall seek the assistance of the Deputy Chief, or through the Deputy Chief they may seek the assistance of a Department member that may specialize in a particular topic. The Shift Commander will review any and all department policies and SOP’s that may pertain to the monthly drill with his group before the drill begins. Shift Commander’s are strongly encouraged to stick to the schedule and should only deviate if weather does not allow the drill to occur. Shift Commander’s are encouraged to hold a classroom session on the scheduled topic if the weather does not cooperate. Shift Commander’s are strongly encouraged to hold the drill on another day if the weather does not cooperate. Lesson Plans will be generated, if applicable, prior to the month’s training. Officers are encouraged to review the schedule and air any concerns or recommendations with the Deputy. If an Officer is on vacation he shall ensure that the Senior Firefighter in the group has all necessary information to conduct the drill. In certain months a particular group may work two Wednesday shifts in a month, in this case an EMS drill or review will be developed for the second Wednesday the group works in the month. When available we will follow the MFA training sheets for FF I/II certification. This is a work in progress, and your feedback is very helpful to the success of this.

- Marine Radio Communications, Emergency Channels

- Proper Clean up and stowing of the vessel, following Salt Water contact

- Review Generator and breaker panel
- Review Pump Panel
- Review Vehicle Specifications, to include Weight and height limitations of the truck itself and also of ladder and when flowing water
- Ladder Operations, both Remote and manual
- Starting and stopping of Power Saws
- Scott Pack harnesses
- Driving the truck in reverse
- Review of Proper truck locations and considerations when arriving on the scene

- Review Jaws on Ladder 7, discuss the equipment, location, power supply

- Review vehicle stabilization prior to extrication
